South Korea is not waiting for the rest of the world to define what 6G looks like. Its three major carriers—SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus—are moving aggressively to embed artificial intelligence directly into the radio access network, positioning AI-RAN as the decisive layer in the coming standards race. This is not another vendor demo or alliance press release. It is a coordinated national effort backed by government funding, live demonstrations, and a clear timeline that stretches into humanoid robot integration after 2027. For Open RAN operators watching from the sidelines, this development carries a blunt message: the window to shape AI-native infrastructure at the standards level is closing fast.

Why AI-RAN Suddenly Matters for 6G Standards

The shift is driven by economics as much as technology. AI data centers, industrial automation, and autonomous systems will demand massive edge computing capacity. Traditional RAN architectures, even cloud-native ones, were never designed for this workload. AI-RAN turns the base station into a programmable platform that can run inference, optimize spectrum in real time, and support new 6G use cases without waiting for the next hardware cycle.

Korean operators understand this better than most. Their domestic market is small; global standards leadership is the only way to export influence and capture value. By racing to commercialize AI-RAN now, they aim to influence 3GPP and other bodies before 2030 deployments lock in architectures. This is not aspirational talk. Two consortiums—one led by SK Telecom, the other by KT—were selected for national projects. Demonstrations are already underway, with plans to expand to humanoid robots post-2027. At MWC 2026, all three carriers unveiled roadmaps emphasizing AI-native base stations and virtualized RAN. The message is consistent: AI must move from the core and the cloud into the radio itself, running at the timescales of wireless transmission.

The strategic bet is clear. Whoever controls the AI models, interfaces, and optimization loops inside the RAN will set the rules for 6G spectrum efficiency, energy use, and new service enablers. South Korea is treating this as a standards contest, not just a technology one.

The Open RAN Angle Operators Shouldn’t Ignore

Open RAN’s value proposition has always been disaggregation and multi-vendor flexibility. AI-RAN raises the stakes. If the intelligence layer remains proprietary and tightly coupled to a single vendor’s silicon or software stack, the openness gains of the last five years could be reversed. Korean operators are already exploring virtualized, AI-powered approaches that align with Open RAN principles. The question is whether global Open RAN deployments will be ready to absorb these AI workloads at the edge or whether they will be forced into closed ecosystems.

Operators that have invested in disaggregated architectures now have a narrow window to demand open interfaces for AI models, standardized telemetry, and programmable control loops. Without that, the AI-RAN wave will favor the same incumbents that dominated legacy RAN. The Korean push shows what happens when national ambition meets technical reality: standards follow the first movers.

What Operators Must Decide Now

The timeline is unforgiving. 6G standardization discussions are accelerating. Field trials and early commercial AI-RAN deployments in Korea will generate data and influence that will shape global specifications. Operators outside Korea have two choices: participate in the standards process with real deployments and open interfaces, or watch as AI-native RAN becomes another closed domain.

This is not about hype. It is about who writes the software that runs at radio timescales and who controls the APIs that let third-party intelligence plug in. South Korea is placing its chips on the table. The rest of the industry needs to respond before the architecture hardens.
